About Burrumbeet State Forest

Located just west of Ballarat in central Victoria, Burrumbeet State Forest spans a modest area of remnant native woodland and open forest habitats dominated by eucalypts, with patches of native shrubs and grasslands. The forest supports a range of wildlife including kangaroos, possums, and native bird species such as rosellas and kookaburras. Historically, the area was part of traditional lands for the Wathaurong people before European settlement. Today, it serves as a valuable conservation site protecting native flora and fauna while providing local recreational opportunities. Burrumbeet State Forest features a network of walking trails and fire access roads suitable for hiking, mountain biking, and casual nature walks. Its proximity to Lake Burrumbeet allows visitors to combine forest exploration with water-based recreation. Although there are no developed campgrounds within the forest, nearby parks provide camping options. The forest’s relatively quiet setting and native vegetation make it an appealing spot for birdwatchers and those wanting to experience nature away from urban centers. The terrain is gently undulating with a mixture of open areas and denser forest patches, making it accessible for families and casual day visitors. Seasonal wildflowers add color to the landscape, particularly during spring and early summer.
